Initial license

Florida Initial HIV/AIDS Course

A board-approved HIV/AIDS course is required for a new Florida cosmetology or barber license. It is not the same course used to renew an existing license.

Initial licensure is not the renewal course

The Board of Cosmetology lists a separate initial HIV/AIDS course approval (COSMO 8) for people applying for a license. The 1 hour of HIV/AIDS inside the 10-hour renewal course does not replace that initial course. The Barbers' Board likewise approves HIV/AIDS courses for initial licensure separately from the 2-hour renewal course.

FLCEO's 4-hour HIV/AIDS salon awareness course is approved for initial cosmetology licensure, for re-applying from null-and-void status, and for transferring an out-of-state license to Florida. FLCEO's 2-hour barber awareness course is for initial barber licensure only. The renewal course for an existing barber license is approval #0007036.

Does the 10-hour renewal course count as the initial HIV/AIDS course?

No. The renewal course includes 1 hour of HIV/AIDS. Initial licensure uses a separate board-approved HIV/AIDS course. FLCEO's initial cosmetology course is 4 hours and also covers null-and-void re-application and out-of-state transfer.

What HIV/AIDS course does a new Florida barber need?

An initial-licensure HIV/AIDS course approved by the Barbers' Board. FLCEO's initial barber course is 2 hours. The 2-hour renewal course, approval 0007036, is for renewing an existing barber or restricted barber license.
